What to Expect from Your Permanent Makeup Journey: Shape, Color & Healing

Natural-looking permanent makeup starts long before the pigment is placed. At Shaped by Shi, I believe your brows should enhance your features—not change who you are.

One of the biggest questions I get from clients is:

“How do you know what shape and color will look best on me?”

The answer is that there isn't one brow shape or one pigment color that works for everyone. Your brows are customized based on your natural features, skin tone, existing brow hair, undertones, lifestyle, and the look you're hoping to achieve.

And if you're nervous about your first appointment, I want you to know this: you don't have to walk in knowing exactly what you want. That's what I'm here for.

Your Brow Shape Is Customized to You

Before we begin, I take time to look at your natural brows and facial features. Brow mapping helps me create a shape that works with your individual proportions rather than simply following a trend.

We'll consider things like:

• Your natural brow shape and growth pattern

• Your facial structure and proportions

• Where your brows naturally begin, arch, and end

• Your existing brow hair

• How much definition you're comfortable wearing

• Your everyday makeup (if any) and lifestyle

• The overall look you want to achieve

  
  

My goal isn't to give you a completely different set of brows. I want your brows to look like they belong on your face.

That's especially important when creating natural-looking permanent makeup.

What About Color?

Color selection is another part of the process that is completely personalized.

I don't simply choose a pigment based on your hair color. Your skin tone, undertones, natural brow hair, and desired healed result all play a role in determining the best color direction.

Something important to understand about permanent makeup is that the color you see immediately after your appointment is not your final healed color. Freshly implanted pigment can initially appear stronger or more saturated than the healed result.

Some clients absolutely love the way their brows look when they leave, and that's okay! Others may look in the mirror and think, “Wow, these are darker than I expected.” Both reactions are completely normal.

My priority is always your healed result.

I would much rather have your brows heal a little softer or lighter than you initially imagined and have the option to add more at your perfecting appointment, than go too bold from the beginning. Once pigment is implanted, we can't simply take it back out. We can always build and adjust, but we can't undo pigment that has already been placed.

As your brows heal, the color will soften and settle, and your final result will become much more apparent. This is why I ask you to be patient with the process and give your brows time to heal before making any judgments about the finished result.

Fresh brows are not healed brows.

Trust the process, trust the healing, and trust that we're working toward a result you'll feel confident wearing long after your appointment.

Your First Appointment: What to Expect

Your first appointment is about more than simply creating the brows.

We'll discuss your goals, look at your natural brows and features, and talk through the shape and color before we begin.

I'll take my time mapping your brows so we can review the shape together. This is your opportunity to ask questions and make sure you feel comfortable with the direction we're taking.

Once we're happy with the plan, we'll move forward with your service.

Afterward, your brows will begin the healing process. It's normal for them to look different throughout the healing stages, and the appearance can change as the pigment settles.

This is why I always encourage my clients to be patient during healing.

You don't need to panic if they look darker, lighter, uneven, or different from what you expected at different points in the healing process. Healing is a process, and your brows need time.

Your Second Appointment: The Perfecting Session

Depending on the service and your individual needs, a second appointment may be recommended as part of the process.

I think of this appointment as the perfecting session.

By this point, we've had the opportunity to see how your skin healed and how the pigment settled. We can assess the healed shape, color, and retention and determine whether any adjustments are needed.

This is also why I don't try to make every decision at your first appointment based on what your brows look like when they're freshly done.

Your healed brows tell us much more.

Some clients may need more pigment in certain areas, a little more definition, or a small adjustment to balance the overall result. Everyone's skin and healing process are different, so your perfecting session is customized to you.

If all heals well after first session, there is no need to schedule a perfecting session and you can wait 1-2+ years for your next touch up. If you're not sure if you need to come back for a touch up just yet, feel free to send photos of your brows.

And What Happens Years Later?

Permanent makeup is designed to last, but it isn't necessarily going to look exactly the same forever.

Over time, pigment can gradually fade and soften. Lifestyle, skin type, sun exposure, skincare, and individual factors can all influence how your brows or lip blush age.

Years down the road, you may decide you'd like a refresh.

When you come back for a future appointment, we don't automatically recreate your original brows. We reassess where your brows are at that moment.

Your preferences may have changed. Your natural brow hair may have changed. Your skin may have changed. Even your idea of what you want may be different.

We'll look at your existing pigment and determine what makes sense for you at that time.

Sometimes a refresh may be appropriate. Sometimes you may need a different approach. And sometimes your existing pigment may need to fade further before we're able to make the changes you want.

There is no one-size-fits-all timeline.

The Most Important Part: You Should Feel Comfortable

If you're considering permanent makeup but feel nervous about choosing a shape or color, you're not alone.

You don't have to come to your appointment with all the answers.

My job is to guide you through the process, explain what I'm doing, listen to what you want, and create a result that complements your natural features. At Shaped by Shi, I'm not trying to give everyone the same brow.
